FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Bates College softball team opened its season with an 18-2 victory over Mount Ida College on Thursday morning, but the Bobcats' bats deserted them in their second game of the day, a 6-0 loss to SUNY Brockport.
Against Mount Ida, Bates plated nine runs in the second inning, then tacked on five more in the third and four in the fourth. The game was called after five innings.
Bates junior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) and first-year Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) each belted a home run and a double to lead the Bates offense, which amassed 13 hits. Franklin was 2-for-2 on the day with three runs and five RBIs, while Saniuk was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs in her collegiate debut.
Pitching in were senior Lissa Moses (Hamden, Conn.), who went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs, and junior Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.), who scored three runs.
Junior Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) earned the win for Bates, going three innings and allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore Kate Brown (Portland, Maine) pitched two innings and gave up two unearned runs on one hit and two walks.
Brockport broke a scoreless tie with Bates in the fourth inning with one run, then added four more in the fifth and a single run in the sixth. The Bobcats totalled five hits, headed by first-year Molly Ritner (Wynnewood, Pa.) with two.
Masino started for Bates and lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. First-year Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) finished up the last 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Bates (1-1) plays Nichols College Friday morning, followed by a game against Salem State in the afternoon.
