LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore midfielder Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored five goals to lead the Bates College women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 17-8 win over Babson College Tuesday evening at Campus Avenue Field.
Senior Shannon Tully (Needham, Mass.) scored three times for the Bobcats (1-0), while senior Sonija Parson and junior Katherine Farmer added two apiece.
Babson (2-1) sophomore Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) led the Beavers with three goals, and first-year Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) tallied two.
Sophomore Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) made nine saves for Bates, while Babson junior Jennie Williams (Andover, Mass.) made seven saves.
Farmer's hesitation, drive and score with 20:47 left in the first period began a 9-1 run by the Bobcats, until a pair of goals by the Beavers with 6:06 and 4:50 to play in the period closed the gap to 12-5.
Tully's free position goal with 35.4 seconds left in the period ended a scoreless stretch of over seven minutes, but the Beavers answered with a score with just 5.1 seconds left in the half, making it 13-6 at intermission.
Wagner scored 39 seconds into the second period to start a quick 3-0 Bates run that made it 16-6. The Bobcats didn't score again until first-year Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.) tallied with 1:20 left to play.
Bates will host the University of Southern Maine Wednesday at 7 p.m. Babson plays Frostburg State in Florida on March 20.
