STOWE, Vt. -- First-year Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) came in eighth overall as the Bates College Nordic ski team had its best showing in the men's 10K Classic Friday at the UVM Winter Carnival.

Combining Nordic and alpine teams, Bates placed sixth out of 12 teams at the carnival.

Ellefson had a 34:32.7 time in the 10K Classic. He was followed by teammates Dan Hubbard (Farmington, Maine) and Dan Johnson (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) in 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) registered a 25th-place showing, and Connor Cushman (Portland, Maine) came in 31st out of 62 finishers.

Kaitlyn McElroy (Bethel, Maine) led the Bates women's Nordic squad by finishing 19th in Saturday's women's 5K Classic, in 20:19.2. Teammate Haleigh Armstrong (Vail, Colo.) came in 23rd, in 20:25.4.

Nicole Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.) and Alissa Praggastis (Sun Valley, Idaho) were 36th and 37th, respectively, and Lauren Jacobs (Winthrop, Maine) was 40th out of 56 competitors.

Bates competes next weekend at the Dartmouth Carnival.
