Bates trio heads up strong men's contingent in 10K Classic

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The Bates College alpine and Nordic ski teams placed fifth out of 13 teams at the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival over the weekend. Bates' 578 points edged Williams (576) and also beat out St. Lawrence, Colby, Harvard, St. Michael's, Bowdoin, Clarkson and McGill, and put the Bobcats behind the University of Vermont, Middlebury, Dartmouth and the University of New Hampshire.

The Bates men's Nordic team was fourth out of 13 squads in Friday's 10K Classic race, powered by a trio of skiers who finished 10th, 11th and 12th out of 105 competitors. First-year Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) was 10th in 26:45.8, followed by senior Seth Hubbard (Farmington, Maine) in 26:53.3 and sophomore Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) in 26:55.9. Senior Dan Johnson (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) wasn't far behind in 20th (27:11.1) and first-year Dylan Mogk (Bozeman, Mont.) came in 32nd place, in 27:39.3.

The Bates women's Nordic squad was fifth in their 5K Classic race, led by junior Kaitlyn McElroy (Bethel, Maine), who finished 11th overall in 18:19.4. First-year Haleigh Armstrong (Vail, Colo.) placed 17th overall in 18:36.3, followed by classmate Nicole Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.) in 32nd (19:26.6), junior Emily Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) in 41st (19:42.7), junior Lauren Jacobs (Winthrop, Maine) in 45th (19:46.1) and first-year Megan Arnold (Huntington, Vt.) in 50th (19:59.3).

In Saturday's mixed 4x5K race, the Bates quartet of McElroy, Ellefson, Armstrong and Hubbard placed eighth out of 42 entries. Coming in 17th place were the Bates foursome of Ritchie, Johnson, Poole and Dunlap.

Bates competes at the UVM Carnival next weekend in Vermont.
