Bettencourt homers twice as Bates collects clutch NESCAC sweep vs. Wesleyan

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates softball delivered two clutch NESCAC wins on Friday at Lafayette Street Field, using Isabel Bettencourt's home runs-including a go-ahead blast in game one-to sweep Wesleyan University, 2-1 and 5-3.

GAME ONE
After four scoreless innings, Wesleyan broke through in the fifth, scoring an unearned run on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead.

Bates answered in the bottom of the sixth. LF Sienna Pietrasiewicz singled to center to start the inning and moved into scoring position before C Isabel Bettencourt drove a 0-1 pitch over the wall in left-center for a two-run home run, giving the Bobcats their first lead of the day.

Bettencourt finished 2-for-3 with both RBI, while Pietrasiewicz also recorded two hits as Bates totaled six in the win.

In the circle, Isabella Albro (3-3) went the distance, allowing four hits and one unearned run. She worked around a two-on situation in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh to close out the win.

GAME TWO
Bates set the tone early in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first. RF Maya Lee singled to open the game, and after two more hits, an outfield error brought in the first run before Bettencourt added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Wesleyan responded with single runs in the second and third, but Bates answered both times. DP Paige Schedler doubled home a run in the second, and Bettencourt led off the third with a home run to left to extend the lead to 4-2.

The Cardinals (14-13, 4-8 NESCAC) pulled within one again in the fourth, but Bates created separation in the sixth. CF Zariya Anderson singled to start the inning, 2B Maddy Miller followed with a base hit, and Schedler delivered an RBI single to make it 5-3.

Miller led Bates with three hits, while Schedler drove in two runs. Bettencourt added two RBI in the game and four total on the day.

Brigid Gaffny started and allowed two runs over three innings before Claire Ballard entered in the fourth. Ballard (3-2) allowed one run over the final four innings and retired six of the last seven batters she faced to secure the victory.

The Bobcats (13-16, 3-9 NESCAC) look to carry their momentum into Saturday as Bates prepares to host a pair vs. Hamilton in another key NESCAC twin-bill. First pitch is slated for noon.
