Bobcats Rally to Win Opener, Fall in Game Two to Split with Hamilton

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates split a NESCAC softball doubleheader with Hamilton College Saturday at Lafayette Street Field, winning the opener 8-7 before dropping the second game, 14-2 in five innings.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first inning off game one, Isabel Bettencourt's three-run homer in the bottom half cut the deficit to two. The dinger marked the fourth of the week for the junior backstop.

The Bobcats tied the game in the second and took the lead with two runs in the third. 2B Maddy Miller singled home a run, and another scored on a Hamilton error to make it 7-5 garnet and white.

Hamilton evened the score at 7-7 in the fifth, but Bates answered in the bottom of the inning when 3B Emma Yen scored the go-ahead run on a fielding miscue by the Continentals.

Bettencourt, batting .438 on the week (7-for-16) went 2-for-3 with three RB( in the triumph. Yen went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Brigid Gaffny earned the win with six innings of relief, allowing two runs. Brigid Gaffny (2-6) earned the win with six innings of relief, allowing two runs.

In the night cap, Hamilton (8-21, 1-13 NESCAC) plated one run in the second, followed by an 11-spot in the third, to take firm control with a 13-0 lead.

Bates scored two runs in the bottom of the third, with LF Sienna Pietrasiewicz recording an RBI single. The Bobcats were limited to three hits in the game. Yael Everett (4-11), after being saddled with the tough-luck loss out of the bullpen in the opener, bounced back with a complete-game win in game two, (2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).

The Bobcats (14-17, 9-3), after having their season-best five-game winning streak snapped with the setback, look to get back on course when they return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 29 with a pair of home NESCAC contests vs. No. 14 Colby. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
