CONCORD, N.H. -- Junior
Henry Ehrlich shot a 71 on Friday and a 73 on Saturday to finish at even par for the tournament as he led the Bates men's golf team at the two-day Penman Spring Invitational, held at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.
The Bobcats finished fifth out of the eight teams competing at the tournament, which was comprised mostly of NCAA Division II programs. As a team, Bates was 13 over par, shooting seven over par on Friday and six over par on Saturday.
Ehrlich (Portland, Ore.) played nearly bogey-free golf in round one. He started on hole 10 and birdied hole 12 before a bogey at 17 put him back at even par. Then he birdied hole one and notched pars on the remaining holes to finish the first round at one under par. He started hot on Saturday, with birdies on holes 11 and 13. But a bogey on 17, a double bogey on four, and a bogey on six left him at two over par. He was able to birdie hole eight and finish the round one over, and the tournament at even par. Ehrlich finished in a tied for 11th out of 45 golfers in the field.
First-year
Sean Resnick (Walpole, Mass.) was just three strokes back of Ehrlich, finishing in a tie for 17th at three over par. Meanwhile, senior captains
Freddie Curtis (Harvard, Mass.) and
Will Phillips (Portland, Ore.) both finished tied for 31st at eight over par. But they got there in very different ways. Curtis was four over par both days, while Phillips was nine over par on Friday. He bounced back to shoot the low round of the day for the team on Saturday at one under par. Phillips tallied four birdies on Saturday.
The men's golf team is back in action this Friday through Sunday at the NESCAC Championships, being held this year at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass.
