BREWSTER, Mass. -- After a tough Saturday, the Bates men's golf team shot the lowest round in the field of 22 schools Sunday at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship, jumping from 16th into a tie for eighth place overall at the 36-hole tournament held at The Captains Course on Cape Cod.
The Bobcats went from 40 over par as a team on Saturday to just nine over par as a team on Sunday, two strokes better than tournament winner Hartford.
First-year
Malin Adams (Litchfield, Conn.) was one of the big reasons why the Bobcats made such an impressive leap. He shot a 79 on Saturday, good for seven-over par on the Port Course. Then he ripped off an even-par 72 Sunday on the Starboard Course, tied for the second-lowest round of the day. Adams birdied five holes on Sunday, compared to just one on Saturday. He jumped up 27 spots on the individual leaderboard and finished in a tie for 15th place overall in the field of 119 golfers.
Sophomore
George Hinton (Charlotte, N.C.) also improved, going for six over on Saturday to a four-over-par 76 on Sunday, recording a pair of birdies on the second day to finish in a tie for 26th place at 10 over par.
Sophomore
Sean Resnick (Walpole, Mass.) and junior
Arthur Jenkins (Shreveport, La.) both experienced -- by their standards -- disastrous rounds on Saturday, with Resnick shooting an 88 and Jenkins an 87. That was all forgotten on Sunday, with Resnick bouncing back to fire a 74, tallying five birdies, and Jenkins shooting a 75, recording four birdies. Resnick jumped up 38 spots in the field and Jenkins rose 33 spots as they finished in a tie for 65th overall.
The NEIGA Championship wraps up the fall season for the Bates men's golf team. They are scheduled to compete in the NESCAC Championship this spring, being hosted by Trinity College April 24-26.
