HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates women's squash sophomore
Navya Gupta has been named first team All-NESCAC, as announced Wednesday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
Gupta (New Delhi, India) played all season at the No. 1 position for the Bobcats, compiling a record of 5-7 against the best of the best in collegiate squash. She was selected to compete at the College Squash Association Individual Championships in January. After playing one match, she sacrificed individual glory for the team as she returned to Bates and helped the Bobcats earn a key 5-4 win over Wesleyan, clinching a bid in the NESCAC tournament.
"Squash is relentless, you can't pause for a second, you're just playing non-stop until the end of the match, and Navya never mentally let down," outgoing interim head squash coach
Ricky Silbersher said. "She just stayed so in the zone -- whatever the result was -- and was gracious, and played with grace."
Gupta, who is now a two-time All-NESCAC selection after being named to the second team last year, capped off her season in style with a 3-2 (11-4, 11-5, 7-11, 5-11, 11-0) win over her opponent from Bowdoin at the CSA Divisional Championships.
