BOSTON and BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates women's track and field team began the indoor season on Saturday with impressive performances at both Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener and Bowdoin's U Bears Invitational, held at BU Track & Tennis Center and Farley Field House, respectively.
Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener Highlights
- First-year Hannah Pawlowski (Bow, N.H.) shined in her collegiate debut, crossing the finish line in the 600 meters in 1:36.05, good for a tie for second on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Senior captain Lucy Paynter (Hillsborough, Calif.) qualified for the New England Division III Indoor Championships in the mile with a personal-record time of 5:14.22.
- Senior captain Evelyn Marchand (Trumbull, Conn.) qualified for New Englands in the 800 meters with her time of 2:22.33, good for 11th place in a field of 20 runners.
U Bears Invitational Highlights
- First-year Charlotte Everhart (Vienna, Va.) led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 400 meters, winning in 1:00.81. Sophomore Dara Salka (Somers, Conn.) took second in 1:02.21.
- Senior captain Moriah Scharn (Dunstable, Mass.) won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.14 seconds while sophomore Graca Bila (Westbrook, Maine) raced to the finish in 9.33 seconds, good for a tie for sixth on the Bates all-time performance list. Sophomore Juno Rogers (Decatur, Ga.) took third in a personal-record time of 9.47 seconds.
- Senior Emma Yen (Albertson, N.Y.), first-year Treasure Hurd (Dallas, Texas), Rogers, and Everhart teamed up to win the 4x400 relay in 4:13.29.
- Sophomore Marie-Ève Maillet (Saint-Antoine, New Brunswick) won the shot put with a personal-record heave of 38-3 (11.66m), good for seventh on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Bila won the triple jump with a top effort of 35-5.25 (10.80m), good for ninth on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Bates took the top three spots in the 20-pound weight throw, led by senior captain Carli Ciavarelli (Ridgefield, Conn.), who won the event with a top effort of 55-7 (16.94m). First-year Temperance England (Havertown, Pa.) grabbed second with a top effort of 46-9.25 (14.26m) and Maillet placed third with a personal-record throw of 46-6.25 (14.18m).
The Bobcats are back in action after the new year when they head to Middletown, Conn. for the Wesleyan Indoor Invite on Saturday, Jan. 10.
