AUBURN, Maine -- Senior
Phoebe Pohl won the individual title, the Bobcats swept the top three places, and the Bates women's cross country team rolled to an eighth consecutive Maine State Meet title Saturday at Roy's Disc Golf.
Pohl (Wayland, Mass.) broke away from the pack, crossing the finish line of the 6K race in 22:48.4. Senior
Isabelle Demeritt (Acton, Mass.) and junior captain
Elizabeth Holcombe (San Francisco, Calif.) finished in second and third place respectively, with Demeritt crossing the finish line in 23:07.3 and Holcombe recording a time of 23:19.4.
The Bobcats placed six runners in the top eight of the race on their way to the title, which featured eight teams and 82 individuals competing.
Runners who finished in the top seven earned All-State honors, and Bates sophomore
Leah White (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and senior captain
Sophie Demeritt (Acton, Mass.) joined Pohl,
Isabelle Demeritt, and Holcombe in the top seven, giving Bates five All-State performers. White placed fifth in 23:36.9 and
Sophie Demeritt took seventh in 23:46.5.
Sophomore
Gwendolyn Anderson (Boone, N.C.) and first-year
Kyra Buckley (Peabody, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Bobcats in eighth and 15th place respectively. Anderson crossed the finish line in 23:57.5 and Buckley recorded a time of 24:17.4.
With the lowest score winning, the Bobcats finished with 18 points, well-ahead of runner-up Bowdoin's tally of 46 points. The University of Maine finished third with 99 points.
The women's cross country team is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they host the Bates Invitational at Pineland Farms.
