Will Phillips led the way for the Bobcats and the Bates men's golf team is tied for 10th place out of 22 teams through round one of the Bowdoin Invitational, being held Saturday and Sunday at Brunswick Golf Club.
Bates shot 15 over par as a team on Saturday, tied with the host Polar Bears and 12 strokes back of the round-one leaders, the Trinity College Bantams. Bates is only four strokes back of a tie for fifth place heading into Sunday's final round.
Phillips (Portland, Ore.) birdied the 12th and 17th holes on his way to a two-over par 74, tied for 19th place out of 109 competitors. He is five strokes back of the leaders, Jorge Montero of NYU and Ty Baker of Endicott.
Sophomore
Henry Ehrlich (Portland, Ore.) also impressed with a three-over par 75. He birdied holes three, nine, and 17.
Junior
Freddie Curtis (Harvard, Mass.) and senior
John Kawakami (Northport, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Bates, with both shooting 77 on the day.
Bates wraps up the Bowdoin Invitational on Sunday, with tee times starting at 9am.
