NEW ORLEANS -- All-Region honors for the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season were announced on Friday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, with four Bates men's track and field athletes making the list.
Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay team.
Senior captain
Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) led the way for Bates, earning All-Region honors in the hammer throw, the shot put, and the discus. Byrne set a personal record in the hammer throw with his top effort of 188-5 (57.44m) at the Maine State Classic on April 22. He also recorded a season-best throw in the discus at the Maine State Classic, winning the event with a top toss of 153-7 (46.81m). He then set a personal record in the shot put with a top heave of 51-6.25 (15.70m) at the New England Division III Championship in early May.
Seniors
Eli Boesch Dining (Concord, N.H.) and
Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.) both made the most of their first (and final) outdoor track and field seasons, with Boesch Dining earning All-Region honors in the 5,000 meters, and Shen sprinting to All-Region honors in the 100-meter dash. Boesch Dining recorded a personal-record time in the 5K of 14:34.73 at the Friar Invitational on April 14, the fifth fastest time in Bates men's outdoor track and field history. Shen kept cutting time throughout the season, peaking with the third-fastest 100-meter dash in program history, as he raced to the finish in 10.74 seconds at the Open New England Championships on May 13.
Junior
Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) earned All-Region honors in the 1,500 meters on the strength of his personal-record time of 3:51.92, achieved at the New England Division III Championship. It's the fifth fastest 1,500 meters in program history.
