LEWISTON, Maine -- The 2022-23 men's squash regular season wrapped up Sunday as #19 Bates College took on #15 Tufts University in an eventual 7-2 win for the Jumbos.
Prior to competition, the Bobcats celebrated the collegiate contributions of their senior class ...
Sultan Hashmi,
Jairaj Singh, and
Jonathan Walker.
Both of Bates' triumphs came in five-game fashion as sophomore's
Alec Spiro (Portland, Ore.) and
Labeeb Ali (Plano, Texas) proved victorious at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively.
Spiro, after dropping the first two games of his match by identical 12-10 scores, rallied to win the next three (11-4, 11-9, 11-2) to nail down the dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Tufts' Harry Charlton.
Ali grabbed an early 1-0 lead in his match vs. Oliver Eielson with an 11-9 win in the first game. Eielson answered in a big way by securing the next two frames by scores of 11-7 and 13-11. Down two-games-to-one, Ali would outlast his opponent and seal the "W" by taking the final two games, 11-9 and 11-7.
Tufts, 8-5 on the year after Sunday's victory, has now won four outings in a row. The Jumbos close out their regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at #2 Harvard.
Bates (10-5) now prepares for the NESCAC Championships, hosted at Williams College (Williamstown, Mass.) on Feb. 11-12.
