LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates record in the 60 meter dash fell for the second straight week and the men's indoor track and field team tallied 211.5 points to roll to victory in the Bates Invitational Saturday at Merrill Gymnasium.
The Bobcats finished first out of six teams. The University of Maine finished in second place with 175.5 points and Bowdoin took third with 129 points.
Meet Highlights:
- Senior Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.) broke classmate Colby Stakun-Pickering's (Wellesley, Mass.) record in the 60 meter dash, set just last week at the MIT Tri-Meet, with a blazing fast time of 7.02 seconds in the final on Saturday. Shen finished second in the race to the University of Maine's Cole Martin, who clocked in at 6.94 seconds. Shen earned the Bobcats eight points with his performance.
- Stakun-Pickering led a 1-2 finish in the 200 meters for Bates, racing to the finish in 22.75 seconds. First-year Reuven Frye (Montclair, N.J.) took runner-up honors in 23.09 seconds.
- The Bobcats had a lot of success in the sprint and mid-distance events, with wins in the 400 and 600 meters. Senior Peter Ackley (New Albany, Ohio) took home the top spot in the 400 meters in 52.38 seconds and senior Owen Glover (Andover, Mass.) won the 600 meters in 1:27.30.
- The mile run also went Bates' way, with junior Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) prevailing in 4:20.12. The Bobcats dominated the event, taking 10 of the top 11 spots.
- First-year Moses Hufford-Bucklin (Media, Pa.) won the high jump with a top leap of 6-0.75 (1.85m), leading a 1-2-3 Bates finish. First-year Matthew Fox (Windham, Maine) placed second at 5-10.75 (1.80m) and sophomore Matthew Hamilton (Sudbury, Mass.) tied for third, also at 5-10.75 (1.80m).
- Senior captain Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) won the 35-pound weight throw with a top heave of 56-10.75 (17.34m).
The Bobcats are back in action a week from Sunday on Jan. 29 at Middlebury's New England Small College Invite, being held at the TRACK at new balance in Boston.
