LEWISTON, Maine -- In a back-and-forth competition between a pair of nationally-ranked foes, it would be #16Â MIT that would come away with the win as the visiting Engineers defeated #18Â Bates College, 5-4, Tuesday in the Bates Squash Center.
The MIT men's squad climbs above .500 at 6-5 after the victory. The Bobcats, coming out on top in six of their last seven outings heading into the match, drops to 9-3 after the setback.
Alec Spiro (Portland, Ore.) recorded Bates' lone shutout of the contest as the sophomore topped MIT's Eli Kramer, 3-0 (13-11, 11-6, 11-6) in the No. 1 slot.
Chris Kenny (Fy.-Greenwich, Conn.) and
Jairaj Singh (Sr.-Jaipur, Rajasthan, India) each needed a full allotment of games in their respective matches en route to five-game victories. Kenny triumphed over Robert Albani at No. 5 (11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9) while Singh, at No. 7, outlasted Mitav Nayak (11-3, 4-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8).
Sultan Hashmi (Tiburon, Calif.) continues to shine at No. 9 for the garnet and white as the senior improved to 11-1 on the year, dropping Saechow Yap by a 3-1 (17-15, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7) score.
Having now concluded a four-match homestand, the Bobcats prepare to trek to #19 Amherst College this Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.
