LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Joanna Atwater and sophomore Ally Friedman won their singles matches but the visiting Colby College Mules defeated the Bates women's tennis team 7-2 in the spring home opener for the Bobcats Saturday afternoon.

Atwater (Short Hills, N.J.) won a tight first set before controlling the second set in a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over Colby's Sam Riordan at No. 2 singles. It was a strong performance especially considering Atwater and her partner sophomore Salma Alsikafi (Lake Bluff, Ill.) had lost to Riordan and Sydney Landau 8-3 in doubles play. 

Friedman (East Hampton, N.Y.) won in straight sets as well, defeating Landau 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. 

Colby (9-3, 4-1 NESCAC) swept the doubles matches and won four of six singles matches. 

Junior Alexandra D'Aquino (Weston, Conn.) turned in a strong performance in a three-set defeat at the hands of Lindsey Hernandez. D'Aquino took the second set 7-5 before falling 6-4 in the decisive third set of action. 

Bates (4-7, 2-4 NESCAC) is back home a week from Sunday at 1pm when the Bobcats host Endicott in a non-conference match.
