INDIANAPOLIS -- A team-record 13 student-athletes from the Bates swimming and diving program will compete in the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships, to be held March 16-20 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The women's team will send 11 Bobcats to NCAAs, matching their record number of qualifications from two years ago. Junior
Nathan Berry (Augusta, Maine) and senior
Andrew Hall (Little Silver, N.J.) will represent the men's team on the national stage.
First-year
Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) earned an individual invite in both the 100 and the 200 backstroke. Cassily won the NESCAC championship in the 200 back and is seeded third in the event nationally with her program record time of 1:57.98. She was the NESCAC runner-up in the 100 back and is seeded sixth for NCAAs with her program record time of 55.23. Cassily also qualifies as part of the Bates 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
Sophomore
Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) is seeded fourth in the 200 yard freestyle with her program record time of 1:49.41 and she earns a seven seed with her 500 yard freestyle time of 4:55.07. She is also eligible to compete in the 200, 400, and 800 yard freestyle relays, as well a the 400 yard medley relay.Â
Junior
Abigail Gibbons (Westtown, N.Y.) is seeded 10th in the 100 yard breaststroke with her program record time of 1:03.05. She also qualifies in the 200 and 400 yard medley relays, as well as the 200 yard freestyle relay. Â
First-year
Stephanie Tropper (Solon, Ohio) is seeded 20th in the 1650 freestyle race with her seed time of 17:14.17 and sophomore
Julia Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) earns an invite as the 26th seed with her time of 17:18.47.Â
First-year
Halé Oal (Huntington Woods, Michigan) is the 25th seed in the 100 yard butterfly with her seed time of 55.73.Â
A trio of seniors lead the Bates relay teams into action at NCAAs this year. Two-time All-AmericanÂ
Maya Reynoso Williams (Somerville, Mass.) will compete in the 800 yard freestyle relay. Four-time All-American
Suzy Ryckman (Riverside, Conn.) qualifies in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays. And senior captain and four-time All-American
Caroline Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) is in the 800 and 400 yard freestyle relays.Â
Sophomore
Marjorie McLeod (Durham, Maine) and first-year
Sophia Carrai (Eugene, Ore.) made it as part of relays as well, with McLeod qualifying in the 200 yard medley and freestyle relays and Carrai in the 800 and 400 yard freestyle relays.
The 400 yard medley relay is seeded seventh (aggregate seed time of 3:45.99), the 200 yard medley relay team is seeded ninth (program record 1:43.07), the 200 yard freestyle relay is seeded 10th (program record 1:34.02), the 800 yard freestyle relay is seeded 12th (aggregate time of 7:29.55), and the 400 yard freestyle relay is seeded 18th (3:28.28).
On the men's side, Berry is seeded 13th in the 100 back with his program record setting time of 48.40. He also earned an invite in the 50 yard freestyle, seeded 19th in the field with his program record time of 20.27.
Hall makes his first trip to NCAAs after qualifying in the 200 IM as the 13th seed with his program record time of 1:49.20.Â
The top 16 finishers at nationals in each event earn All-America honors, with the top 8 earning spots in the championship finals and on the podium.Â
