Sophie Cassily finished on the podium in the 100 backstroke and the Bates swimming and diving teams continued to pile up the All-America honors Friday at the NCAA Championships.
Cassily (Rye, N.H.) raced to the finish in the prelim in 55.73 seconds. Then she secured the best finish in the event in Bates swimming history by taking sixth in the final in 55.72 seconds.
In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the Bates team of senior
Maya Reynoso Williams (Somerville, Mass.), senior captain
Caroline Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.), first-year
Sophia Carrai (Eugene, Ore.), and sophomore
Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) matched the best finish in the event at NCAAs in program history with ninth-place showing. The Bobcats raced to the finish in 7:30.81. Wenger anchored the relay and earned her sixth All-America honor of the meet so far.
Junior
Abigail Gibbons (Westtown, N.Y.) tied for 15th in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:03.91, scoring more points for the Bobcats.
On the men's side, junior
Nathan Berry (Augusta, Maine) broke his own program record in the 100 yard backstroke with his finals time of 47.89, good for 10th place and All-America honors. Senior
Andrew Hall (Little Silver, N.J.) did not finish in the scoring for Bates but did break the program record in the 200 yard butterfly with his prelims time of 1:50.46.
With one day remaining, the Bates women are in 14th place out of 37 scoring teams and the men are in a tie for 25th out of 40 schools.
Prelims are set for 10am and finals for 6pm on Saturday as the Bobcats look to finish NCAAs on a high note.
