WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Sophomores Ally Friedman and Salma Alsikafi won at No. 3 doubles against opponents from NCAA Division II school Rollins College Monday afternoon to open the spring season for the Bates women's tennis team. 

Because of the way Division II schools score matches, the Bobcats (0-1) fell to Rollins (1-4) by a count of 7-0. Division II schools give one point to which team wins the most doubles matches out of three. The Tars won the doubles matches at No. 1 and 2, securing the point. 

But it's an encouraging start to the year for Friedman (East Hampton, N.Y.) and Alsikafi (Lake Bluff, Ill.), as the pair won in convincing fashion by a count of 6-2 over the Rollins duo of Natalia Collado Cordon and Erin Yaroshuk. 

With the doubles point tied at one, the Bates No. 2 doubles team of first-years Drew Williams (Guiford, Conn.) and Olivia Gidlow (Cleveland, Ohio) gave the Rollins combo of Kaitlynn Groves and Maria McKay all they could handle in a tight 6-4 loss. 

The Tars swept the six singles matches on Monday from the Bobcats, who look to bounce back Wednesday when they visit Eastern Florida State for a 12pm match.
