PHILADELPHIA -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team dropped a close one by a count of 6-3 to No. 22 Tufts in the Summers Cup quarterfinals Friday evening.
Bates (5-11) will play Middlebury in the consolation semifinals Saturday at 6:30pm.Â
The Jumbos (7-6) won at the top four positions in the lineup but the Bobcats picked up wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions respectively. First-year
Labeeb Ali (Plano, Texas) won a back-and-forth battle at No. 5, prevailing 3-2 (11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5) over Tufts'Â Vivaan Jaikishan. At No. 6, junior
Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) rallied from a game down to win 3-1 (11-13, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7) over K. Marco Rodriguez.
With Bates down 4-2, the Bobcats got a big comeback victory at No. 9, as sophomore
Garrett Wenberg (Rye, N.Y.) rallied from down two games to none and won 3-2 (8-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-4) over Krish Shah. But Tufts got the clinching win at No.1 in four games. The Jumbos also won a pair of matches at No. 3 and 4 in five games apiece.Â
