Providence, R.I. -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated Brown University Saturday afternoon by a final score of 7-2 in the season-opener for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats won each match from position three through nine with first-year
Chris Kenny (Greenwich, Conn.) and senior
Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, Rajasthan, India) each winning their respective match by a score of 3-0.
Kenny, making his collegiate debut in the No. 5 position, knocked off Brown's Will McLaren by scores of 11-9, 11-7, 11-5. Singh kicked off his senior season in style with a shutout victory of 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 vs. Sam Devorsetz in the No. 8 position.
After losing the first set in his match, sophomore
Labeeb Ali (Plano, Texas) stormed back to win the next three sets and seal a 3-1 win over Vedant Gupta (9-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-9) in the No. 6 position.
The four remaining Bobcat victors also won in four sets. Senior
Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) defeated Raghav Pemmireddy (11-5, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6) in the No. 3 position. First-year
Ashton Monteiro (Greenwich, Conn.) prevailed in his Bates premiere, outlasting Samuel Lew ( 12-14, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10) after dropping the opening game in the No. 4 position. At No. 7, junior
Garrett Wenberg (Rye, N.Y.) toppled Raphael Benamran (11-5, 11-4, 9-11, 11-5). Senior
Sultan Hashmi (Tiburon, Calif.) enjoyed a four-set defeat of Andrew Willwerth (11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6) in the No. 9 position.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. visit to No. 6 Trinity (Conn.).
