MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 24 Middlebury Sunday afternoon by a final score of 7-2.
With the victory, the Bates men (2-6) secured their first road win at Middlebury (0-4) in program history.
The Bobcats won at the top four positions in the lineup, with senior captain
Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) winning an epic first game by a count of 16-14 to grab the early lead. He fell in game two but bounced back to win the final two games, defeating Middlebury's Nathan Feinstein 3-1 (16-14, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9) at the No. 1 position.
First-year
Alec Spiro (Portland, Ore.) showed his resilience, rallying from two games down to defeat Middlebury's Will Lichstein 3-2 (5-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-3) at the No. 2 position and first-year
Harris Ramlee (Malaysia) held off Nate Moll to win in four closely contested games, 3-1 (11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9) at the No. 3 position.
Three Bobcats swept their opponent on Sunday, with senior captain
Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle) taking down Middlebury's Julian Sandoval 3-0 (11-7, 11-2, 11-8) at the No. 4 position. The Bobcats showed off their depth with wins at No. 8 and No. 9 as well. Junior
Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, India) rolled to a 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-7) win over Liam Patty at No. 8 and sophomore
Garrett Wenberg (Rye, N.Y.) swept Oliver Leeds 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-7) at No. 9.
Junior
Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) also picked up a win at the No. 7 position when his opponent retired after Hashmi won the first game 11-2.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday morning at 10:00 when they host Ivy League opponent Columbia at the Bates Squash Center. No spectators are permitted but fans can watch select matches on the
