WATERVILLE, Maine -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team won at the top and at the bottom of the lineup to defeat No. 24 Colby 6-3 Wednesday night in the team's first match in nearly two weeks.
The Bobcats (3-8) have not lost to the Mules (2-7) in men's squash since 2000.
Depth proved key to the team's success on Wednesday, with players winning at the No. 7 through 9 positions. Junior
Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, India) battled back from down a game to defeat Colby's Duda Voldman 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8) at the No. 7 position. A step down the ladder, sophomore
Garrett Wenberg (Rye, N.Y.) won an epic five-game battle at No. 8, holding off Colby's Kit Illick by a count of 3-2 (11-3, 10-12, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6) in a back-and-forth battle. The lone sweep of the evening for Bates came at the No. 9 position, with sophomore
Matthew Lazor (West Hartford, Conn.) winning 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-9) over Colby's Tyler Burt.
The Bobcats were also strong at the top of the ladder. First-year
Alec Spiro (Portland, Ore.) defeated Colby's Jonathan Sosa 3-1 (11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9) in a tight match at the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, senior captain
Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) rallied from down two games to one to prevail 3-2 (3-11, 11-4, 11-13, 11-6, 11-6) over Colby's Dylan Tymkiw at the No. 1 position.
Bates picked up a win in the middle of the lineup as well, with junior
Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) taking care of business and defeating Colby's Ryan Santoro 3-1 (11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-5) at the No. 5 position.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday when they host St. Lawrence at 11am for the team's final home match of the season.
