Alex Kennedy and first-year
Alexander Gujarathi both won at singles and together as doubles partners, but they accounted for all of the Bates men's tennis team's scoring in a 6-3 loss to Colby Sunday at the Wallach Tennis Center.
Colby (4-1, 3-1 NESCAC) clinched second place in the NESCAC East Division with the win, behind Tufts, and left Bates (2-2, 2-2 NESCAC) in third place.Â
Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) and Gujarathi (Plymouth, Mass.) defeated Sumukh Pathi and Hans Hwang 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, but the Mules took a 2-1 lead into singles play as Jan Wenger and Joey Barrett defeated Bates sophomore
Nick Forester (Portland, Maine) and first-year
Nikesh Desai (Hopkinton, Mass.) 8-5 at first doubles and Max Schuermann and Sam Henry defeated Bates sophomore
Cameron Kania (Middlefield, Conn.) and first-year
Thorne Kieffer (Portland, Maine) 8-4 at third doubles.
Colby grew its lead to 6-1 with wins at fourth, second, first and fifth singles. But Bates fought for and won the final two points to be claimed.Â
Possibly playing in his final home match, team captain Kennedy finished off Garrett Reiter at sixth singles 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. Then the match concluded with Gujarathi prevailing in two sets over Ben Powis at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 7-6(4).
Bates is expected to play another match against a NESCAC opponent to be determined next weekend.
