LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 25 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team beat No. 20 Bowdoin for the 30th time in their last 31 meetings, prevailing 6-3 Thursday night in the Bobcats' home opener at the Bates College Squash Center.
Bates (1-3) picked up its first win of the year, defeating the Polar Bears (0-2) in large part thanks to a dominant performance from the top of the lineup.
The Bobcats won at the top six positions in the lineup, sweeping four of the matches. Senior captain
Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) swept Bowdoin's Deven Kanwal 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-6) at the No. 1 position, clinching the match for Bates.
First-year
Alec Spiro (Portland, Ore.) picked up the first win of his collegiate career, topping Jack Winston 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8) at the No. 2 position. First-year
Harris Ramlee (Malaysia) also picked up his first collegiate win, sweeping Jackson Rho 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-5) at the No. 3 position.
Senior captain
Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle, Wash.) rolled to a 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-5) win over John Milligan at No. 4 and junior
Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) rallied from down a game to prevail 3-1 (9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8) at the No. 5 position over Adham Sobhy.
First-year
Labeeb Ali (Plano, Texas) continued to impress with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-7) win over Bowdoin's Henry Somerby at the No. 6 position. Ali has now won two of his first four collegiate matches.
The Bobcats return to action Friday evening when they travel to No. 18 Tufts for a match that gets underway at 5pm.
