PHILADELPHIA -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team fell 9-0 to No. 9 Cornell before losing a 5-4 heartbreaker to No. 26 Dickinson Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania. 

After being swept by the Big Red (1-0) in the early afternoon, the bottom of the lineup shined for the Bobcats (0-2) in their match against the Red Devils (1-5) Saturday evening. 

First-year Labeeb Ali (Plano, Texas) swept his opponent Zachary Hollander at the No. 6 position, winning 11-8, 11-5, 11-4 in his second collegiate match. Junior Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, India) picked up a 3-1 (11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7) victory over Aidan Ray at the No. 7 position and sophomore Garrett Wenberg (Rye, N.Y.) needed just 16 minutes to win 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-4) over Patrick Noonan at No. 8. 

Sophomore Matthew Lazor (West Hartford, Conn.) hung with his Big Red opponent at No. 9 before earning a 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-8) win over Samuel Knipp in the evening match against the Red Devils. 

Dickinson edged the Bobcats at the top five spots, with four matches going four games and one going five. The five-game match saw senior captain Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) rally from down 2-0 at the No. 1 position to force a decisive fifth game. But Dickinson's Nicolas Serna eventually earned the 3-2 (11-3, 11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 11-5) win to clinch the 5-4 victory for the Red Devils.

The Bates men's squash team returns to action Sunday morning at 10am when the Bobcats take on No. 1 nationally ranked Penn.
