MEDFORD, Mass. --Â The No. 20 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team edged No. 18 Navy 5-4 to finish in third place in the Summers Cup in the CSA Team Nationals at Tufts today.
The Bobcats finish the season with a 12-8 overall record. Navy is now 9-15 this year.
The match came down to the No. 6 spot with senior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defeating Navy's Ben Korn 3-1 (14-12, 11-7, 2-11, 11-9) to secure the victory for Bates.
The Midshipmen won at the top three spots. Junior Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) won a 3-2 battle at the No. 4. Attia dropped the first two games to Navy's Millen Randell 11-7, 11-8, but fought back to win the next three 11-8, 11-7, 12-10 for the victory. Navy won at No. 5. The Bobcats won 3-0 at Nos. 7-9. Senior Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) topped Gus Prager 11-2, 11-8, 11-9 at No. 7. At No. 8, sophomore Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle, Wash.) defeated Thomas Rankin 11-6, 11-3, 11-9, and first-year Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) picked up an 11-3, 11-9, 11-6 win over Joe Kacergis at No. 9.
The CSA Individual Championships will be held at the University of Pennsylvania March 6-8.
