Max Schneider led the Bates women's and men's alpine ski teams, respectively, in the slalom races at the Bates Carnival, held at Sunday River.
Coutu (Foster, R.I.) led the Bobcat women's squad to eighth place with runs of 56.03 and 58.8 seconds, for a combined time of 1:54.83.
Sophomore Daphne James (Sausalito, Calif.) was one place behind her in 28th at 1:55.20. Junior Hannah West (Bend, Ore.) placed 30th at 1:55.44, with first-year Grace Schierwagen (North Hampton, Pa.) right behind her in 30th (1:56.40).
Schneider (Rottach-Egern, Germany) led the Bates men's team, finishing 30th on the day among 74 competitors in the men's slalom with a two-run combined time of 2:00.69. Junior Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) placed 33rd at 2:01.8, but they were the only two Bates men who finished both runs on the day.
The Bobcats will race in the giant slalom at Sunday River on Saturday morning to complete the Bates Carnival.
