BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team split its pair of matches at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Bowdoin College today.
The Bobcats, the No. 3 seed, are now 10-6 this season. Bates topped No. 6 seed and No. 22 in the nation Colby (9-7) by a score of 5-4 in its quarterfinal match, and then fell to No. 2 seed and No. 17 in the country Williams (14-7) in the semifinals.
Against the Mules, sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) swept Colby's Alex Spafford 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 at the No. 2 spot. At No. 4, junior Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) defeated Alexander Kurtin 3-1 (11-5, 11-9, 4-11, 12-10). Senior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also earned a 3-1 victory, topping Jason Brodo at the No. 6 spot (12-10, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9). Sophomore Peter Koenigsbauer (Seattle, Wash.) won 11-7, 11-9, 13-11, taking down Ryan Santoro at No. 8, and first-year Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) defeated Duda Voldman 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 at No. 9.
In the match against the Ephs, senior Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) and Rothenberg and battled to five games with their Williams opponents at Nos. 1 and 6, respectively. Bonnell played a tight match with Jacob Bassil at the top spot, but dropped the match 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-4. Rothenberg faced A.J. Solecki, but fell by a score of 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6.
Bates will face Middlebury in the NESCAC Championship third place match on Sunday, Feb. 16 at noon.
