Tess Coutu led the Bates men's and women's alpine ski teams, respectively, in the slalom races at the Williams Carnival held at Jiminy Peak today.
Van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) led the Bates men for the second day in a row. Today he posted runs of 49.57 and 48.21 for a combined time of 1:37.8 for 22nd place out of 69 skiers. Van Vuuren earned 22 carnival points and nine NCAA points.
Senior Michael Cooper (Alta, Calif.) came in 28th place in 1:38.8 for 18 carnival points and three NCAA points. Junior Max Schneider (Rottach-Egern, Germany) finished 30th in 1:39.3, rounding out the team points with 16 and earning one NCAA point. Junior Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) finished in 35th place in 1:41.6. The Bates men took seventh place as a team.
Coutu (Foster, R.I.) recorded runs of 51.01 and 51.76 for a combined time of 1:42.8 for 26th place. She logged 19 carnival points and five NCAA points. First-year Grace Schierwagen (North Hampton, Pa.) claimed 32nd place in 1:44.1 for 14 carnival points and sophomore Daphne James (Sausalito, Calif.) finished 40th in 1:47.1 for eight points. Senior Emma Finfer (Highland Park, Ill.) came in 45th place with a time of 1:49.0. The Bobcat women took 10th as a team.
Bates' combined Nordic and alpine teams finished in ninth place among 15 teams with 350 carnival points.
The Bates alpine teams next compete in the Middlebury Carnival and NCAA East Regionals at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt., on Feb. 28-29.
