CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine --
Joe Gillis and
Michael Cooper tied for 21st place, leading a group of five Bates men who placed among the top 28, to highlight giant slalom racing at the Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf Mountain on Friday.
Gillis (Branford, Conn.) caught up with Cooper (Alta, Calif.) with a faster second run, going 1:01.38 and 1:02.85 for a combined time of 2:04.23. Cooper arrived at the same time with runs of 1:00.91 and 1:03.32.
Senior Ryan Clermont (Lincoln, N.H.) completed the team scoring in 23rd place (2:04.68) out of 74 men, while sophomore Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) was 0.20 seconds and one place behind him in 24th (2:04.88). Junior Calvin Wilson (Canyon Dam, Calif.) placed 28th at 2:07.01.
Sophomore Tess Coutu (Foster, R.I.) led the Bates women's team with a 32nd-place showing out of 73 women in the GS, while senior captain Emma Finfer (Highland Park, Ill.) finished close behind in 33rd place (2:11.43). Sophomore Sarah Gillis (Branford, Conn.) completed team scoring in 36th place (2:12.77).
Slalom races continue the Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf on Saturday morning.
