STOWE, Vt. -- Bates sophomores
Daphne James and
Arie van Vuuren led the way in the slalom for their respective teams Saturday at the UVM Carnival.
James (Sausalito, Calif.) placed 29th out of 74 collegiate skiers with a two-run combined time of 2:02.1, leading the women's team to an eighth-place showing. James tallied 19 carnival points and a pair of NCAA points. Fellow sophomore Tess Coutu (Foster, R.I.) came in right behind James, just missing a top-30 finish with a two-run combined time of 2:02.8, good for 33rd place and 16 carnival points. First-year Grace Schierwagen ( North Hampton, Pa.) rounded out the scoring in 36th place, recording a two-run combined time of 2:04.2, enough for 13 carnival points.
On the men's side, van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) matched his career-best performance in the slalom, placing 16th out of 73 collegiate skiers with a two-run combined time of 1:52.8. He earned 26 carnival points and 15 NCAA points for his performance. Junior Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) was the only other scorer for the men's team, coming in 33rd with a two-run combined time of 2:02.4, good for 10 carnival points.
The alpine skiing teams combined with the Nordic teams to place eighth out of 15 schools with 354 points over the course of two days at the UVM Carnival, one point ahead of ninth place Harvard.
Bates alpine skiing is back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Colby Carnival, taking place at Sugarloaf Mountain.
