STOWE, Vt. -- The Bates alpine skiing teams impressed with six individuals finishing in the top 30 among collegiate skiers in the giant slalom Friday at the UVM Carnival.
The men's team finished in fifth place, led by fifth-year senior captain Michael Cooper (Alta, Calif.), who recorded a two-run combined time of 2:15.7, good for 16th out of 84 skiers overall and 14th among collegiate skiers. Cooper earned 27 carnival points and 18 NCAA points.Â
Sophomore Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) placed 20th overall with a two-run combined time of 2:16.0, good for 24 carnival points and 13 NCAA points. Junior Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for Bates with a top-30 finish of his own, coming in 27th overall with a two-run combined time of 2:17.5, earning 19 carnival points and seven NCAA points.Â
Although he didn't factor in to the carnival scoring, senior captain Ryan Clermont (Lincoln, N.H.) finished 30th among collegiate skiers and 37th overall, earning one NCAA point with a two-run combined time of 2:19.40.Â
On the women's side, the Bobcats finished seventh in the GS. Sophomore Tess Coutu (Foster, R.I.) led the way, placing 27th overall with a two-run combined time of 2:23.1, earning 21 carnival points and six NCAA points. Sophomore Daphne James (Sausalito, Calif.) took 30th overall and 27th among collegiate skiers, tallying 19 carnival points and four NCAA points with a two-run combined time of 2:24.5. Sophomore Sarah Gillis (Branford, Conn.) rounded out the scoring in 38th place overall, earning 14 carnival points thanks to her two-run combined time of 2:27.2.Â
The alpine skiing teams combined with the Nordic teams to finish tied with Williams for sixth out of 15 schools with 200 carnival points on day one of the UVM Carnival.
Bates alpine skiing competes in the slalom on Saturday to wrap up the second carnival of the year.
