Hannah West placed 11th in the women's slalom and senior
Michael Cooper placed 12th in the men's slalom, in the Bates alpine ski team's strong opening to the EISA carnival season on Friday at the Harvard Carnival, held at Waterville Valley.
West (Bend, Ore.) submitted runs of 49.85 and 53.93 seconds for a combined time of 1:43.78, 11th-fastest among 75 collegiate women racing, tying for her best career carnival finish.
Sophomores Sarah Gillis (Branford, Conn.) and Tess Coutu (Foster, R.I.) both finished among the top 25 as well for Bates. Gillis, racing in her first carnival after missing her rookie season with injury, recorded a two-run combined time of 1:47.15 to place 23rd. Coutu was right behind her in 24th place at 1:47.72, her best career carnival finish by three places.
First-year Grace Schierwagen (North Hampton, Pa.) placed 28th in her collegiate debut, at 1:48.50.
Cooper (Alta, Calif.), a fifth-year senior and one-time NCAA Championship competitor for the Bobcats, had runs of 47.08 and 48.69 seconds to finish 14th out of 75 collegiate men at 1:35.77, scoring 22 NCAA Championship qualifying points and 28 team carnival points.
Sophomore Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) placed 22nd with a two-run combined time of 1:38.57, and senior Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) placed 28th (1:39.94) to give the Bates men's and women's squads the sixth-most carnival points among 12 alpine teams.
The Harvard Carnival continues Saturday morning with giant slalom races.
