LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's squash team earned its first victory over a higher-ranked opponent this season on Tuesday, as the No. 25 Bobcats upended No. 22 Tufts 8-1 at the Bates Squash Center.
The Bobcats rose to 4-4 with their second consecutive win, while the Jumbos dropped to 3-2.
Senior captain Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) defeated Tufts' Kunal Valia 12-10, 11-3, 11-3 at the No. 1 position on the ladder, as Bates claimed points at the top six spots. Sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) and senior Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) also won by 3-0 scores at the second and fourth positions, respectively, as did first-year Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) at No. 9.
Meanwhile Bates picked up three points by 3-2 scores, as junior Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt), sophomore Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and first-year Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) prevailed at 3, 5 and 6, respectively.
The Bobcats host No. 20 Dickinson on Wednesday at 6pm.
