Men's squash finishes 21st in the nation with 6-3 win over Amherst in Summers Cup consolation final

STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Bates men's squash team held off Amherst by a score of 6-3 Sunday morning in the Summers Cup consolation final, played at Chelsea Piers Connecticut.

With the win, the Bobcats (11-9) clinch their seventh straight winning season and finish the year ranked No. 21 in the nation and 8th among Division III colleges. Amherst (8-10) finishes the season ranked 22nd in the country.

With the Bobcats leading 4-3, junior Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) clinched the victory for Bates with a hard-fought 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 2-11, 11-9) win over Terrence Wang at the No. 1 position. Bonnell has competed against the best-of-the-best in collegiate squash all season at No. 1 and improved his personal record on the year to 8-12 with Sunday's win.

Fellow junior Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) also had to grind out a win at the No. 2 position. Yousry edged Amherst's Harith Khawaja by a score of 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9) to improve his personal record to 9-10 this season.

The Bobcats won on Sunday thanks mostly to their superior depth. Bates went undefeated at the No. 7-9 positions against the Mammoths, with sophomore Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) edging Mateen Mills 3-2 (5-11, 14-12, 11-9, 7-11, 11-7) at No. 9, junior Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) winning 3-1 (11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 11-3) at No. 8 and junior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) wrapping up the match on a high note with a 3-1 (11-8, 14-12, 10-12, 11-8) win over Chris Zimmerson at the No. 7 position. Muldoon improves his personal record to 11-8, McComish is now 8-12 and Rothenberg is 10-9.

For the third straight day at team nationals, senior captain Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) swept his opponent. This time he took down Amherst's Pavan Nagaraj 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-6) at the No. 5 position. Cannon is 13-7 on the year and 53-25 in his career at Bates.

Select Bobcats will compete at individual nationals starting Feb. 28 at Brown University.
