No. 18 men's squash advances to NESCAC Championships final for third straight year

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 18 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 26 Hamilton 8-1 and No. 19 Williams 6-3 on Saturday to advance to the NESCAC Championships final for the third consecutive season. 

Bates, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will square off with defending national champion and top seed Trinity Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the championship match. 

The Bobcats (11-3) dominated at the No. 3 through 6 positions in both their matches Saturday, going a combined 8-0 on the day. First-year Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) won both his matches at the No. 3 position, defeating Hamilton's John Sawyers 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-3) and holding on to beat the Ephs' William Means 3-2 (11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7).

Bates' two captains held down the fort in the middle of the lineup, with junior captain McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) beating Hamilton's Nick Conzelman 3-1 (11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 11-5) and rallying to prevail 3-1 (9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-9) over the Ephs' Wyatt Khosrowshahi at the No. 4 position. 

Senior captain Anirudh Nambiar (Pune, India) swept Hamilton's Tristan Chaix 3-0 (12-10, 11-8, 11-6) and pulled off a tremendous comeback to win 3-2 (10-12, 11-13, 12-10, 11-6, 11-8) over Williams' Anand Butler at the No. 5 position. 

Junior Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) swept both his matches at the No. 6 position. He beat Hamilton's Atticus Jones 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-4) and took down the Ephs' Claude Smith 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-3). 

Sophomore Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) also turned in a 2-0 day Saturday for Bates at the No. 8 position. He swept Hamilton's Ward Urban 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-7) before holding off Williams' Jamie Havran for a crucial 3-2 (11-7, 11-6, 3-11, 11-13, 11-6) victory in the afternoon. 

Fellow sophomores Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) and Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won their quarterfinal matches at the No. 2 and number 7 positions respectively. Bonnell won 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5) over Hamilton's Callum Sondhi and Rothenberg prevailed 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-2) against the Continentals' Jonathan Ruth. First-year Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) earned a victory against Hamilton as well, with a 3-1 (7-11, 11-3, 11-2, 13-11) victory over Will Jordan at the No. 9 position.

After dropping his match in five games in the quarterfinals against Hamilton, sophomore Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) bounced back in a big way with a 3-1 (11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5) victory at the No. 1 position of the Ephs' John Fitzgerald in the semifinals.

The Bobcats' win over Williams marks their seventh straight over the Ephs.
