HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 18 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team downed Colby 8-1 Friday night in a battle featuring four five-game matches, in the quarterfinal round of Summers Cup (C Division) play at CSA Men's Team Nationals.
Bates (12-4) swept the second through ninth positions to defeat the rival Mules (10-9) more emphatically than their past meeting, a 5-4 Bates win on Jan. 24.
Only two of the nine individual matches were decided in three games, and four others required the maximum five games to decide.
At the No. 1 position, sophomore Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) fell in five games to William McBrian, 10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5.
Bates won at every other position, including 3-2 victories for senior captain Anirudh Nambiar (Pune, India), sophomore Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and first-year Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) at 6, 7 and 8, respectively.
Winning in a sweep were junior Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 4 and sophomore Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) at No. 2. First-year Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt), junior captain McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) and first-year Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) all won in four games at positions 3, 5 and 9, respectively.
The Bobcats advanced to meet No. 19 Franklin & Marshall in the bracket semifinals at 5:30 on Saturday. The winner will face the winner between Dickinson and Middlebury on Sunday.
