LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 18 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 26 Bowdoin for the 29th straight time, winning 8-1 Wednesday at the Bates College Squash Center.
The Bobcats (2-1) swept six matches against the Polar Bears (0-1) in Bates' home opener.Â
Juniors Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) and Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) both earned sweeps at the top of the ladder for Bates. Bonnell defeated Ian Squiers 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-8) at the No. 1 position and Yousry won 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-2) at the No. 2 position over Gannon Leech.Â
Meanwhile, five Bobcats improved their individual records to 2-1 on the year.
Sophomore Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) won 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9) over Satya Butler at the No. 3 position. Senior captain Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) swept Carson Claar 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-9) at the No. 4 position. First-year Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) earned a hard-fought win at the No. 5 position with a 3-1 (11-5, 8-11, 14-12, 12-10) victory over Tyler Shonrock. Junior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) swept Adham Sobhy 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 11-7) at No. 6 and senior captain McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) earned a sweep of his own at the No. 8 position, winning 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-7) over Ishaan George.
Sophomore Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) picked up his first win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Bowdoin's Travis Rase 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-9) at the No. 9 position.
Bates is back in action Saturday when the Bobcats visit No. 15 nationally ranked Brown for a match that gets underway at 2pm. Â
