Kelsey Chenoweth placed 20th in the women's giant slalom and sophomore
Michael Cooper came in 26th place in the men's GS Wednesday, as the NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships got under way at Cannon Mountain.
Chenoweth (Stowe, Vt.), making her second career NCAA Championship appearance, recorded the highest NCAA finish by a Bates alpine skier since 2011. Her first run of 1:12.01 put her in 24th place, and her second run of 1:09.84 was 19th in the field of 34 skiers. Chenoweth's combined time of 2:21.85 was 0.24 seconds behind 19th-place Freydi Einarsdottir of Plymouth State, and 1.12 seconds ahead of 21st-place Emma Woodhouse of New Hampshire.
Cooper (Alta, Calif.), Bates' first male alpine skier at NCAAs since 2012, stood in 25th place after the first run of 1:10.59, before posting a second run of 1:07.88, for a combined time of 2:18.47, 0.13 seconds behind 25th-place Rob Greig of New Mexico.
The alpine portion of the NCAA Championships resumes with slalom races on Friday. The NCAAs continue Thursday with Nordic classical technique races in Jackson, N.H.
