Alpine's Chenoweth, Cooper selected to compete at NCAA Skiing Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bates senior Kelsey Chenoweth and sophomore Michael Cooper were both invited Tuesday to compete at the 2017 NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships after their outstanding EISA carnival seasons.

Chenoweth and Cooper will join senior Nordic skier Sadie James in representing Bates at NCAAs. Seventy-four men and 74 women in all were selected to compete March 8-11 at Cannon Mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire and Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jackson, New Hampshire. The championships will be hosted by the University of New Hampshire.

Chenoweth (Stowe, Vt.) will make the second NCAA Championship appearance of her outstanding career. The three-year team captain is ranked ninth on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival circuit in giant slalom, including a pair of fifth-place finishes in the GS at the St. Lawrence and UNH Carnivals. Her top performances in the slalom have been 16th place at St. Lawrence and 21st at last weekend's Bates Carnival.

Cooper (Alta, Calif.) will be Bates' first male at the NCAA Championships since Alex Jones in 2012. His best EISA carnival performances in his breakout sophomore year were in the slalom, as he took sixth place last weekend at the Bates Carnival and ninth place at the UVM Carnival in the event. Cooper's best giant slalom performance was 19th place at UVM.

Participants to NCAAs are selected on a regional basis from two designated regions for Alpine skiing (East and West Regions) and three designated regions for Nordic skiing (Central, East and West Regions). Bids are awarded to regions using a formula determined by the skiing committee. A maximum of 12 student-athletes (three per gender per discipline) may participate from an institution.

Alpine events will run Wednesday, March 8 (giant slalom) and Friday, March 10 (slalom) at Cannon Mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire.

Nordic events will be held Thursday, March 9 and Saturday, March 11 at Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jackson, New Hampshire.
