NEWRY, Maine -- Sophomore
Michael Cooper turned in the best carnival performance of his collegiate career to date with a sixth place finish out of 82 collegiate skiers in the slalom on Saturday at the Bates Carnival.
In the last carnival race of the year before the NCAA Championships, Cooper (Alta, Calif.) tallied a two-run combined time of 1:53.60. His sixth place finish earned the Bobcats 37 carnival points and earned Cooper 40 NCAA points. Cooper now boasts two top-10 finishes this year, he took ninth in the slalom at the UVM carnival in early February.
First-year Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) also scored points for the men's alpine ski team with a 43rd place finish, good for six carnival points.
In women's alpine skiing, junior Hannah Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) led the way with a 14th place finish out of 80 collegiate skiers in the slalom. Johnson posted a two-run combined time of 1:55.88. She earned the Bobcats 28 carnival points and picked up 18 NCAA points.
Senior Kelsey Chenoweth (Stowe, Vt.) finished in 21st place with a two-run combined time of 1:58.22. She earned 22 carnival points and 10 NCAA points.
First-year Emma Finfer (Highland Park, Ill.) rounded out the scoring for the women with a 38th place finish, good for 10 carnival points.
The women combined for 60 carnival points, good for seventh out of 14 schools in the slalom while the men placed ninth out of 14 schools with 43 carnival points.
The alpine ski teams combined with the Nordic ski teams to finish the Bates Carnival with 460 carnival points, good for seventh out of 16 schools.
Select Bates alpine skiers will compete in the NCAA Championships March 8 and 10 at Cannon Mountain in Franconia, N.H.
