Emma Finfer notched season-best finishes, as the Bates women's alpine ski team placed sixth as a unit in the giant slalom Friday in the Bates Carnival and NCAA East Regional Championships at Sunday River.
Chenoweth (Stowe, Vt.) recorded her third top-10 finish of the season in the GS, hurtling down Bates' home racing course in 1:13.69. Friday's action was halved from the typical two runs to one. Chenoweth, vying to be selected for the NCAA Championships for a third time in her career, ranks ninth on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association circuit in the GS and 15th in NCAA Championship qualifying rankings.
Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) placed 17th overall in 1:15.42, her season-best place by one, while Finfer (Highland Park, Ill.) took 25th place in 1:16.68, her season-best place by four spots. Junior
Sierra Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) gave Bates four skiers among the top 30 individuals with her 30th-place showing.
The Bates men's alpine team was led by first-year
Gavin Chen (Incline Village, Nev.), who came in 41st place out of 79 individuals with a time of 1:22.49. With three teammates unable to finish their runs, sophomore
Dinos Lefkaritis (Larnaca, Cyprus) placed 47th in 1:26.17 to round out the squad's scoring for the day.
Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined for 239 carnival points on the day, seventh most out of 16 competing teams. Action resumes Saturday with slalom races at Sunday River and for Nordic, freestyle races at Black Mountain in Rumford.
