HANCOCK, Vt. -- Junior
Hannah Johnson led the alpine skiing teams with a 22nd place finish out of 57 female collegiate skiers in the slalom on day one of the Middlebury Carnival at the Middlebury Snow Bowl on Friday.
Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) raced to the finish with a two-run combined time of 1:42.22, improving her time by just under three seconds in her second run. She earned 24 carnival points and nine NCAA points.
Sophomore Michael Cooper (Alta, Calif.) led the men's team with a 30th place finish out of 57 male collegiate skiers thanks to a two-run combined time of 1:40.49. He earned 15 carnival points and an NCAA point as well.
First-year Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) also scored points for the men's team in the slalom with a 37th place finish, good for 12 carnival points.
On the women's side, junior Sierra Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) and first-year Emma Finfer (Highland Park, Ill.) supported Johnson with 37th and 40th place finishes respectively. Ryder earned 15 carnival points and Finfer tallied 12 carnival points. The women finished eighth out of 12 teams in the slalom on Friday with the giant slalom coming up on Saturday.
Combined, the Bates alpine and Nordic skiing teams finished day one of the Middlebury Carnival in eighth place out of 15 schools.
