No. 18 men's squash tops No. 27 Bowdoin 9-0 in season opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The No. 18 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team only dropped two games on its way to a 9-0 victory on the road over No. 27 Bowdoin Friday night.

The Bobcats' (1-0) win over the Polar Bears (0-1) marks the 28th consecutive time Bates has beaten Bowdoin in men's squash.

Sophomores Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) and Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) showed there is life at the top of the ladder after the graduations of two-time national champion Ahmed Abdel Khalek in 2016 and four-time All-American Ahmed Hatata in 2017. Yousry, 2016-17 First Team All-NESCAC selection, won 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-6) over Bowdoin's Ian Squiers at the No. 1 position. Meanwhile Bonnell beat the Polar Bears' Satya Butler 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-5) at the No. 2 position.

Playing at the No. 3 position in his collegiate debut, first-year Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) won three tightly contested games in a 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-9) victory over George Cooley.

In the middle of the ladder, the Bobcats' two captains showed off their skills, with senior captain Anirudh Nambiar (Pune, India) winning 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-4) over Gannon Leech at the No. 4 position and junior captain McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) rallying to prevail 3-1 (4-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7) over Tyler Shonrock at the No. 5 position. 

Sophomore Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) earned his first appearance in the starting lineup of his collegiate career and he did not disappoint, winning 3-1 (11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 11-9) at the No. 6 position over Uday Khanna. Fellow sophomore Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got his season off on the right foot with a 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-8) victory over Drew Clark at the No. 7 position. 

The Bobcats showed off their depth at the bottom of the ladder, with first-years Robby Dewey (New Canaan, Conn.) and Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) winning their respective matches. Dewey beat Arjun Dravid 3-0 (11-9, 12-10, 14-12) at the No. 8 position and Muldoon prevailed 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-5) at the No. 9 position over Max Wiegand.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they host No. 30 Connecticut College at noon.
