FRANCONIA, N.H. --
Senior Kelsey Chenoweth finished fifth in the giant slalom on Friday, matching her career-best finish from a week ago, leading the Bates women's alpine ski team to a third place finish out of 13 teams on the first day of the UNH Carnival.
The Bates women finished with 84 carnival points in the GS, placing third between the University of Vermont (117) and host University of New Hampshire (80).
Chenoweth (Stowe, Vt.), racing at the site of this year's NCAA Championships, scored 39 carnival points for Bates and earned 45 NCAA points for the second consecutive week after an identical finish at the St. Lawrence Carnival to start the season.
Junior Sierra Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) placed 14th among collegiate skiers, earning 27 carnival points and 16 NCAA points. Junior Hannah Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) rounded out the women's squad's scoring in 28th place among collegiate skiers, good for 18 carnival points.
The Bates men got a solid performance from first-year Ryan Clermont (Lincoln, N.H.), who returned to his home state and earned 14 carnival points, finishing 32nd out of 83 racers.
The Bobcat men and women alpine skiers combined to accumulate 98 carnival points. Combined with the Nordic skiers, Bates sits in eighth place overall out of 16 teams after one day. The alpine skiers compete in the slalom on Saturday to wrap up the UNH Carnival.
