Ryder leads women's alpine in slalom races at St. Lawrence Carnival

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Junior Sierra Ryder, senior Kelsey Chenoweth and junior Brielle Antonelli all placed in the top 25 competitors Saturday to highlight the slalom event at the St. Lawrence Carnival for the Bates alpine ski team.

Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) placed 14th out of 63 women to lead Bates, in one of her top three career EISA carnival performances. The 11th-fastest second run in the field, 50.43 seconds, gave her a combined time of 1:44.31.

Chenoweth (Stowe, Vt.) was close behind in 16th place (1:44.50), a day after her fifth-place finish in the giant slalom. Antonelli (Warwick, N.Y.) placed 25th, her career-high performance by one place, with a time of 1:47.38.

The Bates women scored 72 carnivals points in the slalom, two points shy of Middlebury for sixth place out of 13 teams in the event.

First-year Gavin Chen (Incline Village, Nev.) placed 36th out of 66 competitors in the men's slalom, with a time of 1:38.21, scoring his first career carnival points with 11.

Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to score 437 carnival points for a seventh-place finish out of 17 participating colleges.

Bates competes next weekend at the UNH Carnival, with alpine races at Cannon Mountain in Franconia, N.H., which will be the site of the NCAA Championships in March.
