HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Trinity College Bantams rallied with four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to edge the Bates softball team 13-9 Sunday afternoon.
Before Sunday's game, Bates and Trinity resumed their suspended game from April 2. Bates did not score in the fifth inning in that game and fell 13-5.
The Bobcats (0-18, 0-6, NESCAC) impressed on offense with 15 hits in Sunday's contest. Senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) went 3-5 with a double and three runs batted in on Sunday. Sophomore Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) went 2-3 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and two walks. Hitting in the seven hole, sophomore Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) delivered a 3-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored.
The Bates bottom of the order was outstanding in general with sophomore Maria Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) going 2-4 with a run scored in the eighth spot in the lineup and senior Marina Barsoum (Newark, N.J.) finishing 2-4 with two runs scored as the nine hitter.
At the top of the order, first-year Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 1-4 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Down 2-0, the Bobcats tied the game in the top of the second. With one away Ahlholm singled. Garbarino followed with a single of her own and with two outs in the inning Russo doubled both runners home to even the game at two.
Through three innings, Bates trailed 5-2 but they scored four times in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead.
Ahlholm got the rally started again with another single. One out later Barsoum bunted for a hit and Russo got hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Schiller drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at three. Then Lockhart gave Bates a 4-3 lead with an RBI single. Junior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) singled in Russo and first-year Madison Fox (Denver, Colo.) drove in another run with a fielder's choice to make it 6-3 in favor of the Bobcats.
Trinity got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at six. But the Bobcats responded in the fifth with a three spot.
With one away Garbarino and Barsoum reached on back-to-back singles. With two away Schiller and Lockhart smacked an RBI single and a two-RBI double respectively to extend the Bates lead to 9-6.
In the bottom of the fifth, Trinity took the lead for good.
Victoria Baez drew a lead-off base-on-balls to star the frame. Meaghan Race singled and Elizabeth McQuaid walked to load the bases. A Michelle Treglia RBI single cut the Bates lead to 9-7. A Bates error allowed another run to score and a Courtney Erickson two-RBI double put the Bantams up 10-9.
They added three insurance runs in the sixth and Bates did not score again in the contest.
The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they visit Amherst for a doubleheader starting at 2:30.
