CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates softball team continued its hot hitting in the last two games of its five-day, 10-game run at the National Training Center tournament, but the Bobcats' first victory still eluded them in a 12-10 loss to Worcester State and an 8-3 defeat against Union.
Bates (0-10) rapped out 15 hits against Worcester State and 12 more against Union; the Bobcats batted .374 as a team and scored 26 runs in their last three games.
The Bobcats will next play at the University of Southern Maine in a doubleheader on March 30.
RECAP: Worcester State 12, Bates 10
Worcester State scored all 12 of its runs in the first three innings, and that 12-1 advantage was too much to overcome for Bates, which clawed back within two by scoring seven runs in the fourth, followed by single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
First-year first baseman Madison Fox (Denver, Colo.) went 4-for-4 in the fifth spot in the order, as every Bobcat in the lineup had at least one hit. Junior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) and seniors Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Marina Barsoum (Newark, N.J.) had two hits apiece, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lancers' (1-0) barrage of eight doubles, three of them by Sydney Despres. Despres and Taylor Daniels had three hits and three RBIs apiece for Worcester State.
First-year Kylie Martin (Poland, Maine) threw two shutout innings in relief of first-year Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.), who dropped to 0-3.
RECAP: Union 8, Bates 3
Bates had a 1-0 lead for three innings until the Dutchwomen (1-3) tied it in the fourth and went ahead 5-1 with four runs in the fifth. Bates made it a two-run game with two runs in the fifth, but Union scored three insurance runs in the seventh.
First-year leadoff hitter Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 3-for-4 and scored the first run of the game on a single by Inlow in the bottom of the first.
Martin, who threw a complete game for the Bobcats, kept the Dutchwomen scoreless through three innings before a sacrifice fly put Union on the board in the fourth. Brianna Godlewski led off the fifth with a solo home run to put Union in the lead for good at 2-1, and Union added three more in the inning, including an RBI double by Courtney Casey.
Lockhart's two-run double -- her eighth double of the trip -- scored Schiller and Russo to close the gap to 5-3 after five innings.
Union's Joanna Chalifoux and Molly O'Brien hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh to extend the lead by two.
Dana Dolinko earned the win for Union, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on 12 hits and no walks.
